ARE YOU AT RISK OF BURNOUT?

Review the following questions, and make a note how often you answer “yes”.

Check the results of your burnout risk below.

  • Are you thinking, “Is this all there is?” or “There’s got to be more to life than this”?
  • Do you no longer laugh or have fun at home or work?
  • Are you short-tempered with, or emotionally cut off from your family and friends?
  • Are you more irritable toward co-workers, clients or customers?
  • Do you always see work as a chore?
  • Have you developed chronic worry about your job?
  • Have you become obsessively workaholic?
  • Do you feel bad about how long it takes you to do things?
  • Do you feel irritated about how long it takes other people to do things?
  • Have you lost heart or feel lethargic and empty?
  • Have you ever described your situation as soul-destroying?
  • Do you long to feel wholehearted and committed again?
  • Do you resort to blaming external factors, anyone or anything?
  • Have you become quiet, introverted or isolated?
  • Are you often ill when you have a holiday?
  • Are you down or depressed and unable to cope?
  • Do you wake up tired?
  • Do you under- or over-eat or abuse alcohol or other mood-altering substances?
  • Do you feel as though you are living someone else’s life?
  • Do you long to make drastic changes, but feel insecure, afraid or don’t know where to begin?

If you responded yes to up to 4 of the questions:

You may just be having a bad day. If these are passing feelings you have a low risk of complete burnout. But if these feelings persist and you are also experiencing some of the signs & symptoms of burnout you will need to take action.

If you responded yes to between 5 and 10 of the questions:

If you are not already burnt out, you are at high risk. It is likely that you will also be experiencing symptoms. If symptoms are evident, you should consult with your doctor. In addition you are advised to take action to prevent total burnout.

If you responded yes to between 10 – 20 of the questions:

You are most certainly burnt out. You should consult with your doctor and are strongly advised to take immediate steps to safeguard yourself and your future health.
